Pilot programme · Brandenburg & Ruhr region

The pub is the living room of the village.
Let’s bring it back.

Comeback der Kneipe (“The Pub Comeback”) is a privately funded pilot programme that strengthens existing pubs and village inns economically — with funding, practical know-how, proven event formats and a network of landlords and landladies who all want the same thing: busy evenings and a lively town.

Why we exist

Every pub that closes is more than a business closing down.

Germany has lost more than half of its pubs since 2002. In the Prignitz region, four out of ten pubs have closed for good since 2010; in the Uckermark, half of all traditional taverns are gone. And the ones still standing are struggling: drinks-led hospitality is running at roughly 40 percent below its 2019 level in real terms.

With every closure, a town loses its meeting place — the room for the sports club and the card night, for birthdays and funeral coffees, for the kind of conversation at the bar that happens nowhere else.

At the same time, something is shifting: the pub is back in fashion. A young generation is rediscovering darts, pub quizzes and honest prices; takeovers and village initiatives are making headlines.

This is not a rescue mission. It’s a comeback — at exactly the right moment.

What we do

We fund what’s actually missing — different for every pub.

No two pubs are alike, so there is no standard package. Instead, every participating pub picks from a toolkit.

Impulse budget

Up to €10,000, freely usable — for the cosy corner, the terrace, quiz equipment or a kitchen for a lunch menu.

Host position

Alternatively, a funded service host for one year — more hands behind the bar, longer opening hours.

Practical training

Profitability first — taught by hospitality people, measured against monthly revenue.

Event toolkit

Proven formats for busy weekday evenings — quiz nights, live music, games and club nights.

Landlords’ network

Monthly exchange with the other participating pubs — the best advice comes from peers.

Visibility

A joint campaign, local press, community events — participating pubs are pioneers, not charity cases.

For landlords and landladies

You know your pub. We bring the tailwind.

We don’t tell anyone how to run their pub — you stay in charge of your own house. We show what works elsewhere; you decide what fits.

How it works
1

Apply

One page, one phone call or a voice message. Done within an hour, promise.

2

Meet

We come by, have a drink and listen: what’s weighing on you, what’s working, what’s missing?

3

Get going

Selected pubs start with their package, the training and the network. Free of charge, with radically little paperwork.

What matters to us

We’re looking for genuine pubs at the heart of their towns — run by hosts who love their place and have their community behind them. That’s why applications include a supporters’ list: people from your town who pledge to become regulars or supporting members.

Sounds good? The pilot starts in 2027 — applications open in winter.

Want in, or just want to stay in the loop? Two minutes in the form is all it takes — informal, no strings attached.

For partners

Together, 20 pubs become a model for many more.

Comeback der Kneipe is privately funded — we don’t need money; we need experience, trust and reach. We work with everyone who wants to strengthen pubs and lively town centres.

What partners get

A professionally run, transparently evaluated programme, visible involvement in a cause with broad public sympathy — and a direct line to a model built to scale after the pilot.

Let’s talk — 30 minutes is all it takes to start.

Trade associations & chambers

DEHOGA, IHK: your practical judgement, pointers to suitable pubs and, if it fits, a visible partner role.

Savings banks & foundations

Regional matched-funding campaigns so locals can chip in for their own pub.

Job centres & employment services

Funded host positions — good for the pubs, good for people on their way back into work.

Breweries & beverage wholesalers

Equipment, terms, know-how — nobody knows these businesses better.

Municipalities & researchers

Lively town centres and an honest, independent evaluation of what works.

How we work

Four principles you can hold us to.

01

Invite, don’t lecture.

We show options and good examples — the pub decides.

02

No red tape.

One-page applications, fast decisions, lean reporting. A landlord’s time belongs behind the bar, not behind a desk.

03

Honestly measured.

We agree with every pub what success looks like — and we publish what worked and what didn’t. Both.

04

Knowledge is shared.

Every lesson from the pilot is documented and made openly available, so many more pubs can use it.

Programme lead

Comeback der Kneipe is a privately funded initiative: a private benefactor covers the costs of the pilot — no public money is involved, and participation is entirely free for the pubs.

The programme is led by Darius Küller, an entrepreneur from Brandenburg with hands-on hospitality and events experience and a soft spot for lean, unbureaucratic processes. It will be carried by a non-profit association (currently being founded); independent academic evaluation of the pilot is planned.

The plan

Applications and onboarding in winter, launch with 6–8 pubs in Brandenburg and the Ruhr region for the spring season of 2027 — then step-by-step expansion to around 20 pubs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does participation cost anything?

No. The programme is completely free for participating pubs — budget, training, formats and network included.

Who pays for this — and what’s the catch?

A private benefactor funds the pilot. There is no catch: we sell nothing, we broker nothing, and pubs take on no financial obligations. We ask for one thing only: share your experience so others can learn from it.

Is this political?

No. We support pubs as businesses and meeting places — open to all guests. There is no agenda beyond that, and none is needed.

Which pubs are eligible?

Existing pubs and village inns with a bar business, ideally at the heart of their town — run by owners who want to carry on. No start-ups, no pure event venues, no members-only clubs.

When does it start?

Applications open in winter; the pilot launches for the spring season of 2027. Get in touch now and you’ll be the first to know.
